In 1862, Black Men began officially joining the Union Army - this happened in New Orleans, specifically at a place called the Touro Almshouse. This event is nationally significant because it's the moment the Civil War changed - from a war of secession to a war to end slavery. And New Orleans led the nation. The Touro Almshouse burned down after the war - and today the location has new buildings, including Beanlandia. As caretakers of the property, we would like to help educate New Orleanians on this piece of history that many are unaware of (after the Civil War, Confederates successfully changed the historical narrative and buried the history of the Louisiana Native Guards).
