For over a century, New Orleans shared a narrative of the city's history that largely omitted key events that took place in the city, specifically the creation of the Louisiana Native Guard, the first African Americans to officially join the Union army. Louisiana also led the nation in efforts at desegregation and voting rights. These bits of progress were overturned in 1874-1877. For over a century, the city's landscape featured Confederate monuments and told a different story of the city's history. As a result, many New Orleanians are less informed about the city's past. We hope to help rectify this through public programming and a new model for how organizations can work together to foster a community's reconciliation. Funds raised here will be shared by the Krewe of Red Beans and the André Cailloux Center 50/50. These funds will be used for history lectures, programming, and other public memory activations.
